Whatman Road Studio

The client, a structural engineer and keen cyclist, wanted to create a place to work at home which could also house an expanding collection of bicycles.

The result was two distinct volumes, unified by a green roof, softening views of the shed from neighbouring gardens. The main space has a large timber sliding glass door facing the garden. In contrast, the bike shed is concealed with a hidden door clad in cedar slats. The timber frame is well insulated and features underfloor heating for year-round use. The project was approved as permitted development and did not require planning consent.
