Turku
Our vision responds to an illustrious past and imagines an extraordinary future, while celebrating the vibrant creative urban culture of ‘the present’ in the Linnanniemi Art and Design District.
Acknowledging the present is the only moment within which the past or the future may be imagined, the Museum will host an annual calendar of events, conceived as a collection of volumes gathered beneath a unifying roof as a proud backdrop to the manifold activities.
Deeply low carbon and highly recyclable through its innovative use of locally sourced waste granite block, the Museum is inherently adaptable, comprised of both generous volumes and intimate spaces for learning and spectacle. Abundant new public realm provides a stage upon which casual encounters will unfold and lively seasonal events will celebrate the ‘Present’. Designed to support and inspire individuals, groups, and institutional visitors alike, through informal gathering and civic events, the museum will be a catalyst for the creative community.
Composed as a collection of volumes, formed of local materials and gathered beneath a unifying roof, the Museum evokes the unique beauty of the Finnish landscape. Bisected by ‘The Street’, the composition juxtaposes the scale of the main exhibition space with the more intimate requirements of the wider brief.
To the west, the Museum stands proud as a backdrop to the civic quality of Museum Square, a place of arrival, to gather, meet and host events. To the east, the Museum fragments into Castle Park, providing sweeping views of the Castle and city beyond.
