Albion Bridge, Canada Water

A detailed planning application has been submitted to the London Borough of Southwark for a new amenity focussed crossing at Canada Water, London.

Carter Gregson Gray are working with Art Invest Real Estate (AIRE) and bridge engineer and fabricator, Cake Industries, to deliver a new bridge and playful promenade that will traverse the Albion Channel at Canada Water. The bridge will add to the public realm investment in Canada Water as part of AIRE’s redevelopment plans for the dock edge. Inspired by the history of the former docks, the new crossing offers residents and visitors a new perspective; a place to pause and reflect on the water’s edge. Contributing to the area’s ongoing transformation, the bridge replaces an existing narrow bridge with a generous, accessible deck.

By reinstating the currently hidden 19th Century granite dock edge, the bridge reveals the historic dock proportions and appears as a floating raft between the dock edges. Inspired by early images of timber planks floating in the dock, the bridge becomes more permeable at its edges, in dialogue with reflections on the water. The gentle, organic geometry provides delight, encouraging visitors to enjoy the reestablished biodiversity of Canada Water.
